HOW THE HELL DID YOU BEFRIEND AN AUSTRALIAN MAGPIE

ofools

From what I’ve heard, australian magpies are actually quite nice if they trust you not to hurt them. Swooping season happens because, as a species, they’ve learned that most humans are Dangerous and so they preemptively attack to protect themselves and their young. If you’ve been nice to a group of magpies, though, they’ll remember you and you won’t be swooped at.

melredcap

Magpies are extremely cool birds, and very intelligent… which means that they know that humans are the biggest threat around and that we can be good friends. Thus, swooping, and also not swooping humans who have proven themselves to be trustworthy sources of food.

The funniest interaction I ever had with some magpies was when one of my former workplaces had our Christmas lunch as a picnic in a park. A pair of magpies were teaching their fledgeling how to beg for food from humans. First one would approach, crouch down and coo at us; someone threw them a bit of cheese. Then the other adult approached, crouched down and cooed at us; someone threw a piece of cabanossi. Both tidbits were picked up, taken back and shared with the offspring… then the adults were standing there looking at the fledgeling and then at us, obviously going “Go on, then, you try it!”

Fledgeling magpie nervously walked closer to us, looked back at its parents, then half-crouched and yelled “RAWK!” in our direction. We cracked up laughing, startling the poor baby, but he or she got over it pretty quickly when a HAIL of bits of cheese and sausage landed all around.

Hey, I love this movie too!

But if you do the math this isn’t entirely that fantastic a feat?

117 minutes x 60 gets 7,020 seconds.

7,020 seconds / 52 gets us 135 weeks

135 weeks is equal to 2.59 years, which is just about the average animation production cycle. (Maybe a couple months longer than usual)

Yes, the average tent pole can have maybe a couple seconds done in a week by an animator, but it’s usually a second per week because of the countless revisions and key frame processes.

Also, there weren’t 800 animators on this film, that would be a little insane to keep on payroll. The IMDB lists 155, while one of the animators says ~180. This is a pretty average AAA animation studio size to get a feature done in a normal amount of time.

I love the film too, it broke a lot of ground for animation! No point blowing them up though and making them sound like Gods when they’re still just a part of the industry like the rest of us.

#gif  #steven universe  #steven universe spoilers  #pink diamond #rose quartz #the more we learn about rose the more everything she did makes sense #and the worse i feel for her  #all she really wanted was a family #but she wan’t emotionally mature enough to handle things #and what started as little problems quickly grew out of control #it’s ironic that her son who hasn’t even existed for two decades is more equipped to handle a lot of the things she couldn’t overcome #and sad that she thought she would never be able to grow enough to overcome them #even though she’d already grown and changed so much #the problem wasn’t her status so much as the fact that she kept running away from her problems #but even then her running away from her problems was because of the attitudes she was raised to have #rather than plain old selfishness or manipulativeness #she was a product of her environment as much as any gem or human #but she lacked the perspective to break out of her old patterns #and felt like someone else could do better in her stead and decided everyone would be better off if she didn’t exist #she’s never going to get to see those problems get resolved as herself and finally live her life as herself #and that’s one of the greatest tragedies of the show #the other greatest tragedy is just how many other people got wrapped up in her failure to solve her problems #and how much damage they suffered because of it #which wouldn’t have happened if being raised by the other diamonds hadn’t damaged pink in that particular way #it’s like a whole self perpetuating cycle of damaged people damaging other damaged people #and now this little kid is tasked with breaking that cycle #on the one hand it’s horribly unfair to expect so much of a child #but on the other hand it’s incredible to see how much one little action can go towards healing centuries of hurt #how a little human kindness and empathy can start pushing people towards real lasting change for the better #this show’s themes are really neat is what i’m saying

@golvio has the only valid analysis of Pink/Rose everyone else go home
